Automotive experts HPI has announced its very own top ten list of Hollywood’s most memorable movie cars following a poll amongst its team of motoring editors and analysts.
The poll coincides with the release of summer action movie Hobbs and Shaw, a spin-off from the blockbuster Fast & Furious series, which features stars Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson plus a cast of cool cars including a McLaren 720s, several other McLaren Sports Series, a Jeep Gladiator and a hot rod that appears to be modelled on a Peterbilt semi-truck.
Derren Martin, head of current valuations at HPI, said: “Over the years we’ve seen an astonishing variety of cars appearing in films driven by iconic Hollywood stars ranging from Steve McQueen, Michael Caine, Robert de Niro and Burt Reynolds to characters including James Bond, Mad Max and the entire cast of the Fast & Furious franchise.
“As ever, choosing the most memorable movie cars resulted in much debate but we managed to come up with a list of stunning, scene-stealing cars that are often more memorable than the movies they feature in. And while they’re unlikely to feature on the shopping lists of the vast majority of drivers these memorable cars continue to provide lots of escapist entertainment and fun.”
The Top 10 list of greatest ever car chases as picked by HPI’s team of expert editors and analysts is:
1) Aston Martin DB5, Goldfinger and Thunderball
2) Ferrari 250 GT California, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
3) Pontiac Trans Am, Smokey and the Bandit
4) Lotus Esprit Series I, The Spy Who Loved Me
5) Ford Mustang GT 390, Bullitt
6) Dodge Challenger R/T, Vanishing Point
7) Mini Cooper, The Italian Job
8) Dodge Charger, The Fast and the Furious
9) Lamborghini Countach LP 400S, The Cannonball Run
10) DeLorean DMC-12, Back to the Future
Added Derren: “Once again from the many famous cars to choose from, 007’s iconic Aston Martin DB5 came out on top in our poll and for good reason. The Bond character’s legacy of famous cars can be traced back from this one car that featured in Goldfinger and Thunderball. The cars become legendary the moment they appear in any James Bond film, but none has become as memorable as the machine-gun-equipped Aston Martin DB5 that debuted in Goldfinger. The original movie car sold at auction in 2010 for $4.6 million.”
